Make the most of your Christmas tree and keep it looking vibrant from the day you bring it home until well after Christmas by following these easy care tips:
1. Choose your tree early
Get your Christmas tree early in the season to secure the freshest one possible. Christmas trees are typically cut around the same time, so choosing yours early gives you more control over its health from day one.
2. Make a fresh cut
Before setting up your tree, make a fresh cut by trimming 1-2 inches off the bottom of the trunk ( we can do this for you!). This cut removes the dried sap and allows the tree to absorb water more effectively. Immediately place the tree in a bucket of water so it can start rehydrating - if you wait too long, the base may seal up again, which will prevent it from taking up water.
3. Let it drink outside
Leave your tree outside in a bucket of water for as long as possible before bringing it indoors. Trees “drink” best in a cool, non-stressed environment, so letting it absorb plenty of water outside can help maintain its freshness once it’s indoors.
4. Avoid heat sources inside
When it’s time to bring your tree indoors, resist the urge to place it near a fireplace, radiator, or heater. Direct heat sources will dry out your tree much faster. Find a spot that’s cool and away from direct heat to keep it looking lush for longer.
5. Use a sturdy tree stand with a large water reservoir
A tree stand with a large water reservoir will reduce the need to constantly refill it, making your tree care routine easier. This will help keep the base submerged in water, which is essential to its health.
6. Decorate your tree
Once your tree is well-hydrated, it’s ready to be decorated! (You’ll receive a 10% discount on Christmas decorations in our Farm Shop when you buy your tree with us!)
7. Check the water daily
Your Christmas tree will need plenty of water to stay hydrated. As a general guideline, it will require about a litre of water per meter of height each day—but if your home is warm, it may need even more. Always check that the base is submerged in water, as allowing it to dry out will cause the trunk to seal up with sap, stopping it from drinking any more water and therefore shortening your tree’s lifespan.
8. Enjoy!
Sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful Christmas tree with a cuppa (or something stronger) in hand...
Pro tip: Treat your tree like a fresh-cut flower
Just like cut flowers, your Christmas tree will last longer with consistent water and care. Follow these steps, and it should stay healthy well into the New Year.
